Clothing curriculum
/By Santa Rosa – CYC-Centro Nuestro Child Care Director
During the month of January, children in CYC’s Early Learning program discovered the topic of clothes through wonderings and exploration. For their first investigation question, children were asked “What different types of clothes are there? Why do we wear them?” In the second investigation, children were to wonder “How do we take care of clothes?” Students learned about and experienced different methods of washing and mending clothes. Children also explored how clothes are made and where we get our clothes from (this is when the dramatic play area became a store…the children named it Target!) At their “Target” store, children were able to purchase and/or sell clothes. Everything had a price which allowed children to practice number recognition and learn about money.
Students had a pajama day, sportswear day, and hat day. Activities included decorating paper clothes after reading “The Paper Bag Princess.” Teacher Ms. Patterson brought in her sewing machine so children could watch an expert sewing. They had the opportunity to ask questions and learn, and they were closely supervised as they explored the sewing machine.
To celebrate the month-long learning, the classroom had a celebration by putting together a “Fancy Fashion Show.” Students showed off their winter coats, then modeled their fancy clothes. From the classroom, to the homes of those learning virtually, we saw children dressed in their fanciest attire.
