Kiyan is becoming a master chef through CYC’s programs!

In celebration of Black History Month, CYC has been hosting a weekly series called Chew & View to commemorate the contributions of African Americans and honor Black culture. Chew & View sessions are held virtually for families and teach healthy soul food recipes and provide the opportunity to watch films like Soul, Harriet, and Black Boys. After eating their meals and watching the movie, families test their knowledge through a Kahoot quiz with questions about the film.

Yateece and her 9-year-old son Kiyan have attended all the sessions so far. During his time at CYC, Kiyan has developed a love of cooking. The Chew & View series has provided an opportunity for Yateece and Kiyan to try new dishes – her favorite has been smashed cauliflower while he most enjoyed cooking and devouring meatballs and noodles.

The Chew & View program is a fun way for families to build community and engage in important conversations. Kiyan loves learning about Black History and is constantly sharing new facts he’s learned. Yateece is happy that Black History Month opens the door for a dialogue to discuss significant Black figures and events.

Yateece thinks the Chew & View series has been a great way for families to come together and continue to learn. “Whoever developed the program is brilliant,” she shared. “The healthy foods and movies are awesome!”
