Full STEAM Ahead!

The end of summer certainly does not mean the end of fun and learning, especially not at CYC! We recently wrapped up our PlayStreets series with a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) Decathlon. Over the course of the summer, CYC partnered with PlayStreets for a wide range of engaging Friday afternoon activities, such as Wheels in Motion, Dancing with the CYC stars, and more!

After a full day of learning, eager students poured out of our Center to compete in various STEAM activities set up along the blocked-off street. At each table, CYC team members and volunteers hosted different STEAM experiments and activities for each child to complete. Each challenge offered students the opportunity to think critically, ask questions, use their imagination, and explore!

One table had a jar filled with Starbursts and a scale. Students were instructed to examine the jar and use the scale to make a hypothesis about how many starbursts were inside.

CYC learners put together shapes and diagrams using mini marshmallows and toothpicks at another station. One table had small metal puzzles that could be connected and separated - but not without strategic thinking and determination! Once a student completed their STEAM activity, a team member or volunteer would check off their scorecard.

While youth ran from table to table and explored various subjects, our favorite DJ played lively tunes, and our team cooked up hot dogs and snacks for everyone to enjoy. The activities wrapped up just in time for our families to pick up their kids and hear the winners announced. CYC crowned the first-place champion, and we had an unprecedented tie for second place! The winners were presented with prizes and thunderous applause for their hard work.

“The purpose of the Decathlon is to have fun but to also put the same amount of effort into STEAM subjects as you do sports,” Center Director Clarence Hogan said to the crowd. “It doesn’t matter if you get everything right, but that you try.”

We had a blast at our STEAM Decathlon, and are especially grateful to the volunteers from Pangea Cares, who dedicated their time, efforts, and STEAM skills to engage our kids!
