Music to our ears

CYC Families enjoy a socially distant concert to kick off back to school.

A partnership with Porchlight Music Theatre brought socially distant sounds to the North Lawndale community. On September 26th, the CYC-Sidney Epstein Youth Center hosted a Back to School Kick-Off Concert at a local community park. Families registered in advance, were provided with masks and hand sanitizer, and were assigned their own family “parking spot” areas on the lawn to maintain social distancing.

Porchlight singers performed songs from Disney classics like The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, as well as fan favorites from The Wiz. Their voices filled the crisp fall air with notes of promise and unity, with many attendees relishing in the rare opportunity to safely spend time together. Families couldn’t help but sing along to their favorite tunes – enjoying the absence of prompts to “please mute yourself” that have become ubiquitous in virtual together time.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to build community as many Center neighbors popped over to enjoy the singalong as well. Other community members displayed a visible bounce in their step as they glided past in sync with the rhythm of the music.

Thank you, Porchlight, for helping provide a much-needed chance for CYC families to lift their voices and enjoy time together.
