Memorial Gifts

A Special Giving Option to Consider if You are 70 ½ Years of Age or Older

Preliminary Qualifications:

  1. Are you are 70 ½ years of age or older?
  2. Do you have an IRA from which you need to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) each year?
  3. Would you like to contribute to CYC while using your RDA tax-free?

If you answered “yes” to these three questions, we have good news for you. The tax-favored treatment of charitable contributions from IRAs has been made permanent by the federal government. Here’s how it works:

  • If you are 70 ½ years of age or older, you can transfer any amount up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to the charity of your choice. (Hint: CYC qualifies!)
  • The amount transferred is not reported as taxable income on your federal tax return.
  • The amount transferred also qualifies as part of your RMD for the year.

For example, let’s say your RMD for 2016 is $15,000. If $10,000 was donated directly from your IRA to CYC, you would only need to take $5,000 additional as a taxable IRA distribution from your IRA.

Summer at CYC

For children in Chicago’s south and west communities, summer can be a time of food insecurity, learning loss, and escalating violence. CYC makes summer a season of possibility for these children. Learn how.
